The designs for the latest addition to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC) are now on show.

The campus is currently home to the University's School of Clinical Medicine, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), the MRC Institute, Cancer Research UK, and Cambridge University Health Partners.

The latest plans are for a new AstraZeneca facility, which, include designs for the Global Centre, and an R&D Enabling Building.

Key features of the site include:

  • High technology labs on the site separated from other work spaces by glass walls to promote ‘visible science’.
  • The site will feature a number of open spaces and thoroughfares to encourage collaboration not only within AstraZeneca, but also with the wider scientific community within the CBC and beyond.
  • The site will be low rise and will include a central courtyard 'reflecting the colleges of Cambridge University'.
  • The site will feature labs that represent best practice in low energy design and the largest ground source heat pump in Europe. “Green Roofs” will also be installed across the majority of the site.

The new facility will be the UK home for biologics research and protein engineering carried out by MedImmune, AstraZeneca’s biologics arm, says the firm.

Designs for AstraZeneca’s new site are being made available today as part of a public consultation for the local community, ahead of submission of a detailed planning application in Autumn 2014.

AstraZeneca says it expects to begin the build of the new site in early 2015.

New designs revealed as a public consultation is launched.

Public consultation

A public planning consultation is being held for AstraZeneca’s plans.
