Five Cambridge academics have been honoured today by the British Academy in recognition of their outstanding research.

They are among 42 UK academics from 22 universities welcomed as Fellows by the Academy covering subjects from law to neuroscience.

Lord Stern, President of the British Academy, said: “I am delighted to welcome these fine researchers and scholars into our Fellowship. Our Fellows are elected from across the UK for their distinction in the humanities and social sciences.

“Together they represent an unrivalled reserve of expertise and knowledge. They play a vital role in the work of the Academy, encouraging younger researchers, engaging in public discussion of the great issues and ideas of our and other times, contributing to policy reports and publications, and helping to select researchers and research projects for funding support.”

The five Cambridge academics honoured are:

  • Professor Marina Frolova-Walker. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatoire, Professor Frolova-Walker came to Cambridge in 2000 as a Reader in Music History and Director of Studies in Music at Clare College. Her interests lie in the histiography of Russian music and her current research focusses on 20th century cultural history, particularly on the music of Socialist Realism and its relation to Soviet power structures.
  • Professor Susan Gathercole. Professor Gathercole is the programme leader for the Memory and Perception group at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. She focusses particularly on children with developmental disorders in memory, attention, language and learning, looking at the nature of the underlying cognitive deficits and what can be done to overcome them.
  • Professor Matthew Kramer. Professor Kramer is Professor of Legal and Political Philosophy in the Faculty of Law, and director of the Cambridge Forum for Legal & Political Philosophy. His specialisms include legal positivism, normative ethics and meta-ethics and his most recent book considers issues of torture and moral integrity.
  • Professor Rae Langton. Professor Langton is Professor of Philosophy and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Born in India, she has lived and worked in Australia and the United States, most recently at the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT. She writes and teaches on feminist philosophy, ethics, metaphysics and the history of philosophy.
  • Professor Judith Lieu. As Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity, Professor Lieu’s specialisms include second century Christianity and aspects of the New Testament, especially the Johannine literature, and feminist and gender analysis of the New Testament and other early Christian literature.

During the ceremony today Lord Stern also welcomed the election of 15 new Corresponding Fellows from overseas universities together with two new Honorary Fellows, Dame Liz Forgan DBE and Lord O’Donnell.
